“I love long evening walks through the dark and winding cobbled streets of this Magical city. The fact I’m usually dragging a dead body behind me is quite unimportant.”

... all mad here!

… all mad here!

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Steven Dark is your host-in-residence (… they won’t let me out but I’m sane, I really am!) of Horror Radio 24/7/365, brilliant but mildly eccentric and sometimes purple bearded Sorcerer of Despair, writer of gloomy poetry and dark fiction, Absinthe aficianado, connoisseur of Gothic fiction and chocaholic.

Welcome to the Mad House, my highly individual, very idiosyncratic and tiny piece of the wyrd and wibbly wobbly web. It may, on first acquaintance, appear peculiar, even illogical, but, like ‘Alice’s Wonderland’, it has a peculiar logic of its own. Rather like Dr. Who’s TARDIS the site appears deceptively compact yet is, relatively, extensive. Scattered around are examples of and information about my various artistic and creative endeavours including writing & poetry, acting, media & other absurdities.

The most cursory glance over my site will reveal in a matter of a single moment, a mere blink of an eye, that I am mad about Alice … absolutely mad. Mad as a Hatter in fact! I don’t mean Alice Cooper nor Alice in Chains and I’m not talking about Smokey’s ‘Alice’, Woody Allen’s film ‘Alice’ or Alice Springs in Australia.
I am of course talking about Lewis Carroll’s Alice.

Alices-Adventures-in-Wonderland

Yes, hands up, I admit that I have something of a wee penchant, as well as for chocolate, coffee, yadayada, for the life and works of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 –1898), better known as Lewis Carroll, Oxford Don and author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), What Alice Did Next, Who the Fuck is Alice?, the sequels Through the Looking-Glass which includes the poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark, and of course the final piece in the trilogy What Alice Found There (1871)all of which are sometimes, unfairly to my mind, pigeonholed as being in the genre of literary nonsense.

The point of this and a serious one at that is to contradict the common description that the strange world into which Alice is thrust unsuspectingly is illogical. An inherent paradox given that Carroll was a consummate Logician. Yet Alice’s Wonderland is not as illogical as it first appears. It has a peculiar logic of its own that requires an intuitive leap of lateral thinking to understand it. Difficult in its simplicity. Once the leap is made the logic becomes clear. Our own material world, less than Wonderful in a myriad of ways, is equally topsy-turvy with inverted values where, for example, those in caring professions and those who dedicate their own careers to saving the lives of others are paid a comparative pittance while the vacuous Prima Donnas of the Cult of Celebrity who inhabit the superficially glossy worlds of Sports, Media and Entertainment, many of whom are famous for simply being famous, earn incomes that staggeringly contradict their intrinsic worth. As with Wonderland, yet its polar opposite, our materialistic world has its own peculiar though twisted logic with its global culture of corporate greed that engenders consumerist fascism at the expense of the very environment on which we and every other species depends. Sheer Madness. Welcome to the Mad House!
